In the beginning, God created a beautiful and perfect world. He also made Adam and Eve in His image and gave them the ability to accept or reject Him. When they encountered Satan, they chose to reject Him. Having foreseen this, God responded in both judgement and grace, introducing suffering and death, but also setting in motion His plan to restore the lost relationship.
Inspired Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16-17) provides insights into God's working His plan, culminating in the coming of God in the flesh in the person of Jesus Christ - His Son. The New Testament testifies of the life, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, and of His subsequent ascension to heaven where He continues to reign at the right hand of the Father.
In His death, Jesus paid our penalty for our sins, thus reconciling the world to the Father through Himself.
In His resurrection, Jesus conquered death, giving us the hope of eternal life.
In His reign, Jesus rules over all creation as God works to accomplish his purposes which will culminate in the second bodily return of Jesus to judge all humanity and to usher in new heavens and a new earth where God's resurrected and glorified children will live with Him forever.
The inspired Scriptures (2 Timothy 3:16-17), reveal God's will and purpose for His children as we live our new life in Christ in anticipation of Jesus' return. God has revealed a normative pattern for us, both as individuals (e.g. Ephesians 2:10), and as a community of Christians (e.g. 1 Timothy 3:14-15). In this regard, members of The Point Church are committed to understand and exemplify the enduring teaching, character and practise of God's children, both individually and collectively, as it was originally revealed by God and recorded in the New Testament - thus becoming a church of God's dreams.
While we have no formal creed as such, the seven "ones" of Ephesians 4:1-6 serve here as a summary of our fundamental beliefs. In our commitment to respond to God's love with lives worthy of Him, we seek to nurture a community of Christians characterised by humility and gentleness who, while bearing with one another in love, sincerely desire to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace:
God's church is the body of Christ (Ephesians 1:22-23). It is a living organism comprised of all those people in fellowship with God in Christ and therefore in fellowship with one another. We consider the unity of God's people to be vital (John 17:20-21). This oneness of Christ's body is celebrated by The Point Church each Sunday in sharing the Lord's Supper (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 10:15-17). This is why we are non-denominational.
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead. God's word was revealed by the Spirit and today He convicts the world of sin and sets apart God's people by means of that inspired word (John 16:8; 17:17; 1 Corinthians 2:1-16; Ephesians 6:17). Jesus promised His disciples (later called the apostles) that He would send the Holy Spirit in a special way when he departed, to guide them into all truth (John 16:13-15) and to live in all who are baptised into Christ (John 14:17; Acts 2:38).
Our hope of eternal life is based upon Jesus' own resurrection from the dead and His promise recorded in John 4:1-4. We are merely sojourners and pilgrims in this life (Matthew 6:19-21,33; Colossians 3:1-4; 1 Peter 2:9-12).
Jesus Christ, God's Son, is the second person of the Godhead "…there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live" (1 Corinthians 8:6). For around 33 years He was also Emmanuel (meaning, 'God with us'), both teaching and showing us how to live until He died as the perfect (sinless) atoning sacrifice for our sin, was buried and then raised from the dead before his ascension back to heaven (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). God has now given His Son all authority and our allegiance to Him is expressed through trust and obedience - i.e. faith (Matthew 28:18-20; Colossians 2:6-10).
"Faith comes from hearing … the word of Christ" (Romans 10:17). We believe that, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16). We also believe the New Testament Scriptures are the sole and authoritative revelation of Christ's will for His people living under the new covenant (Hebrews 1:1-2; 1 Corinthians 14:37). This is "the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints" (Jude 3). At its core is the gospel: the good news about God's grace received through Christ's atoning death, burial and resurrection that we can appropriate through repentance and baptism (2 Corinthians 5:18-21).
Immersion in water is the faith response commanded by God at which time a repentant believer is identified with Jesus' own death, burial and resurrection and receives from God the Holy Spirit and the forgiveness of his or her sins (Acts 2:38; 22:16; Romans 6:3-7; Colossians 2:11-12). All spiritual blessings have been bestowed by God upon all those who are baptised into Christ (Ephesians 1; Galatians 3:26-29) and continue to aim to live Christ-like lives.
Our heavenly Father is the first person of the Godhead, "…there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live" (1 Corinthians 8:6). He is the creator and sustainer of all life. He initiated His plan for saving us in His Son as an expression of His gracious, loving and merciful character. Together with the Son and the Holy Spirit, the Father is the object of our adoration, service and praise. Our chief purpose and desire is to honour Him by reflecting His holy character and purpose in our own lives to His glory.
Just as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one in identity and fellowship, so too we seek to be one body and share fellowship with all those who obediently submit to Christ's lordship in baptism and so are led by the Spirit, contending for the one faith and sharing the glorious hope of heaven.
